Unsure about the best legal status for me going forward

I am in a very similar situation to PeterC, seen here:

  • I am a web developer from the UK
  • I have 1 client in the UK
  • I earn around 31,000€ per year (that’s what I’m set to earn by the end of 2017).

From the linked post, you told him that AE is for those with more than 1 client and that he risks a penalty if he is investigated. I was shocked to read this because I hadn’t read that anywhere else.

Whilst I have this one client, I am working on other ideas to generate income and can take on other small online jobs as and when I need to such as:

  • giving English classes
  • proofreading tasks
  • translations tasks
  • video production.

I want to be able to deduct my expenses (working from a co-working space, home internet if I work from home, travel to the client’s office) and can’t do that as an AE.

Am I better off creating an EIRL and signing up with an accountant (2 separate things but they go hand-in-hand) or going with an Umbrella corporation and being a salarié? By the way, does being under an Umbrella corporation (portage salariel) mean you are treated by banks as if you had a CDI? i.e. more favorably when trying to get a mortgage?
