Workers E106 renewal refused, how do I get health care?

I was a micro-enterprise for over four years and this year, from January, have opted for the régime micro-social simplifié. As a result I have always had a carte vitale. My husband, who is in receipt of a UK government pension, has been going back to do occasional work in the UK, self-employed and covered by the workers E106. However, his work has dried up and he has just been refused an E106 renewal by the UK. He is therefore not currently in the French health system.

He has recently started doing a very small amount of teaching work at the local Lycee but this will only average 15 hours or so every three or four months - he receives a payslip which lists a huge number of different deductions, so he is paid net. My question is - can he piggy-back onto my carte vitale or does he go to CPAM or something else? We have lived in France for over six years and my husband is 53.
