Why do I have to keep account of my expenses?

After watching your video on accountancy records, I have a question. Apart from keeping track of my buisness for all the usual reason, why do I have to keep account of my expenses if I cannot claim for them? Once I had discovered I could not claim for my expenses, I had stopped keeping receipts etc. for a while, so I just want to find out if this is going to cause me problems later on.
