Which months do I declare my turnover for?

I have been an auto-entrepreneur for a year now and declare every three months. Can I just clarify: I pay now in January for money received in October, November and December? This is what I have been doing but someone said I needed to include payment received in January for work done in December. But that would make 4 months and as far as I understand it has to be the payment received within the three months previous, irrespective of when the work was done.
