When to change from auto-entrepreneur to reel simplifie?

It looks like I will go through the auto-entrepreneur threshold for earnings for 2012 about June this year and obviously be well over by year end. My thought was to transfer to reel simplifie at the end of Q2, i.e. complete 2nd trimestre return for auto-entrepreneur online and then switch - but reading here it seems I can’t switch until year end - is that correct?
The reason I wanted to switch was to be able to claim the 2,000€ or thereabouts in equipment I need to buy for work which is obviously non-deductible under auto-entrepreneur. As I understand it, cotisations are backdated and then regularised against what has already been paid (I may well be wrong here). Can expenses, petrol and equipment being the main ones, be backdated also?
