What would be our tax liabilities on a chambre d’hotes?

We are at early stages of considering a move to France. I have searched through the forum, but aware that tax and regulations change over the years. We are a married couple in our early fifties and have no children. We are looking to open and run an upmarket bed and breakfast / chambre d’hotes and this will be our only source of income.

We thought a chambre d’hotes would be ideal, but are concerned about the restrictions and unsure about the tax implications. Having done a business plan, we would hope to simply offer bed and breakfast for four luxury rooms and this shows a total annual revenue of 70,000 euros.

  1. What would be our tax liabilities at that level of turnover, and do we qualify as a chambre d’hotes?
  2. I understand that being a chambre d’hotes is a very strict regime and that hotels in France have been increasingly concerned about chambre d’hotes operating as quasi hotels. Are the regulations and taxes more onerous if you decide to be a bed and breakfast / small hotel rather than a chambre d’hotes?
