What regime for a singer and entertainer?

I have a friend who is a singer and entertainer that wants to register so he can advertise (all media require a SIRET before they will accept an advert) to generate some more gigs as he puts it. Not likely to generate a huge income, the odd private function and perhaps something public. The obvious answer is the auto-entrepreneur but it seems to be that this does not extend to artists and musicians. If he goes the micro route he’ll probably pay more in cotisations than he earns! I guess he could cheat with the APE code (9002Z - support rather than 9001Z - actual performing arts) but any guidance would be gratefully received.
