What can a handyman do and does it include wordwork?

My husband was a coachbuilder in England for 25 years, working with wood and metal to build cars, and also did building maintenance for the same company. He was self-employed.

Now that we live in France, he would like to become an auto-entrepreneur and do general handyman work, and if possible also some woodwork. He has no formal qualification, but he could get a letter from the company he worked for in England confirming that he has done this work. What can he register as and do without a qualification?
