Should I be payed a wage?

I have been offered a job as gardien of a large property and it comes with small house. There is a contract but no pay as the small house comes rent free, also heating and water are included - but I would be paying for phone and electric. Is this legal in France or should there be some form of wage for the purpose of tax. I am also looking to register as an auto-entrepreneur.
