Retirement and Renting your main home under the 120 day rule

My husband wants to retire after working here in France since 2016. We wish to earn our living by renting our property out under the 120 day rule so as not to attract capital gains tax when selling. I have read somewhere that it must not be more than your main income. Does this apply if you are retired. I already hold my siret and applied to the Mayor for permission and have rented for 8 weeks this year but need to be sure I am not misinterpreting the rules. many thanks
