Most practical way to register an evolving business.
I’m a mechanical engineer in the process of moving to the French Pyrenees, and whilst I’ve done a fair bit of research myself, I’m a little unclear what the best approach would be for my situation.
In the short term, I’ll be a remote engineering contractor, providing design services to clients in the UK and Ireland (and possibly further afield) whilst living in France (I’m an EU citizen with an Irish passport). Later in summer 2026, I intend on renting out some of my house as an Airbnb/ chamber d’hôte.
In 2027, I plan to transition to a cycle touring business, offering accommodation and guided tours within the area, and considering a “table d’hôte” style where I can provide optional meals. I would still intend on maintaining my engineering activities over the winter period.
I guess my main uncertainty is whether I’m best to keep these activities totally separate from the start, or start as a Micro-entrepreneur and adapt as required. My income will be quite modest for the first year <€20k as I scale back in my current work to focus on house renovations.
Thanks for your help - your videos have been very helpful so far.
