Is auto-entrepreneur right for gardening?

I am interested in looking at my options to open some sort of business in France. I went along to the chambre de metier to have the different types of business in France explained. Unfortunately, this was before auto-entrepreneur was up and running. Consequently, I do not understand exactly how the system works. Is there an idiots guide explaining the system available?
Initially, my primary role maybe property care, looking after people’s gardens, holding keys and small maintenance jobs for people with a second home. My passion is dogs and horses, so a second option maybe pet sitting. I hold a HND in construction but have been unable to establish what this allows me to do in France. Advice please.
