Importing goods?

My husband and I are looking into importing simple children’s shoes for sale. He is already registered to fabricate and sell garden ornaments. Obviously this comes under the Chambre de Metiers. If we also decide to import shoes, we have been told we need to register with Chambre de Commerce. A friend told us this is very expensive, but she’s not an auto-entrepreneur. Is it expensive, or is she wrong? Just want to check before we get into something we can’t afford.
