I’m an American, what visa do I need to open a business in France?

I’m an American, living in Paris, just finished my Master at Paris and I’m now starting a business with a French friend. When my student visa runs out, which is soon, I intend to apply for an artisan / commerçant Visa. What’s this auto-entrepreneur stuff all about, is it a visa in itself? I’m reading the website, but I kind of don’t get why I would want to do this or what it’s all about.
