How much tax do I pay as a micro-entrepreneur?

From listening to your podcast there are two options for paying income tax as a micro-entrepreneur. If I understand correctly the first option is to pay income tax on 1% of turnover every month or quarter and the second option is to pay income tax on 29% of turnover in arrears every year.
The first option appears to be paying almost no tax at all and the second option appears to be paying 29 times the tax of the first. Have I missed something?
