How is income tax calculated and paid in France?

Can you please explain how income tax is calculated and paid in France. My husband has opted to pay 1.7% at source but I have not and we would like clarification on how anything in excess of this is calculated please. There are two adults and two children in our family. Also, when will we receive our tax returns and what are the deadlines for submitting them?
