Health cover when there is no turnover?

I currently work as a freelance in the UK and other parts of the world, but want to move permanently to France, necessitating setting up a business - probably as an auto-entrepreneur. I don’t expect to do much - if any - work actually in France, but as a resident I would obviously be taxed in France, and as someone who’s not yet reached retirement age, the question of access to the French health system is very important.

Since my income from employment is somewhat erratic, I’m wondering how this would affect our entitlement to benefits. For instance, what happens if there’s no turnover (and therefore no contributions are paid) for a few months? Is there a way of paying voluntary contributions during periods of commercial inactivity? Also, any views on the relative merits of setting up as an auto-entrepreneur compared with using a portage company?
