French customs demand an invoice?

I bought something for my company in the US and now French customs demand an invoice or, if I am particulier, a statement of the content. The latter would be much easier and quicker for me to provide. Can I just send the statement, because as being an auto-entrepreneur, I cannot claim a deduction anyway.
