Expenses - Paying taxes on gross profit

We are now coming to pay our first taxes and I am concerned about the amount I am paying. Am I correct in assuming you pay just on gross profit and no expenses are part of the picture. Assuming I made 3000 euros gross, but I had expenses of 2200, I am still paying on 3000 euros? Can you clarify this for me?
