EU grants/payments for agriculture, land preservation in France?

I own quite a large area of land here in France, some of which has previously been used for cereal crops etc., but is now left as meadowlands. Someone asked me recently if I’m getting the most from EU grants (under CAP I assume) either for using the land productively, or for the pursuit of nature conservation.
It has never occurred to me that grants/payments might be available, despite my closest neighbours being predominantly farmers. I wonder if you can provide some guidance in this area? I live in Indre (36).
