Do we need to register with Gites de France?

I have recently registered as auto-entrepreneur for the income I receive from my gite and have received a great deal of paperwork in relation to this. Impots have contacted me requesting further information including une copie de l’agrément du classement en gîte rural, délivré par l’agence départementale des Gîtes de France à Périgueux. We live in the Périgord. I didn’t think it was necessary to be registered with the Gites de France?

I had already previously sent Impots the déclaration en mairie de location de meublé de tourisme, however it would appear that this is not sufficient. Do you have any further information as to whether I need to register with Gites de France?
