Do I need to register as self-employed?

I have the possibility to work on a cruise ship in International waters, but am trying to sort out how to pay (or not) tax on the earnings. I shall be out of the country for 8 months of the year and paid gross by my employer. I think I need to register as self employed and then declare earnings at the end of the year, but several people have told me that I won’t have any tax to pay as I’m away more than half the year. Also I am only working for one employer so can I do this as self-employed?
