Do I need to register as an auto-entrepreneur for a gite business?

I bought a house in France in September last year that was a gite rental business. When I bought it it had two bookings that I honored. I have now had bookings and guests since the 20 June and am so very confused as I am now told I need to register as an auto-entrepreneur business. I understood you did not have to declare unless you made over 23,000 euros. I was wrong. Please advise if this is what I need to register as and can you point me in the right direction to completing the form online. Will I have penalties to pay do you think? I have not actually made any profit as I have had to furnish the gite and have kept accounts.
