Do I have to choose a retirement scheme?

I have recently registered as an agent commercial under the auto entrepreneur scheme and I keep receiving letters telling me I must choose a retirement scheme (protection sociale complémentaire) within 3 months. Is this right? And if so, please could you explain the system?
