Do auto-entrepreneurs have to sign up to a new business register?

I read a post that says businesses set up in France as auto-entrepreneurs have to contact the chambre de commerce et d’industrie (CCI) in order to sign up to some new business register. The post implies that the régime social des indépendants (RSI) were supposed to tell everyone about this but they have not. It also said that fines of thousands of euros would be imposed on people who did not make this new registration. Do you know anything about this… if so does it apply to all auto-entrepreneur businesses in France including those who run gites?
