Can I use a personal bank account for my business?

I paid a visit to my bank the other day and asked if it was OK for me to be running a business through my personal account as I was worried about regularly paying cash into my account. My business runs virtually just on cash. They said it was fine as long as it wasn’t large amounts of money, I don’t expect my turnover to be over 6-7k. What’s the official stance on this? How expensive is it to run a business account?
