Can I run my business in the UK from France where I now live?

Following on from my question last week you kindly answered, how does the following work.
I have been told by various people living in France, that although they live here full-time, they run their businesses in the UK from France. British clients, paying in UK money… but the business owner is living in France and doing the work in France. Is this legally possible?
It is my situation also in that I also happen to now live here and do my work from here, but exclusively for British (85%) American (10%) and others (5%) clients/residents who pay in their own currency in the UK. Any help with this appreciated.
By clients/residents I mean live in the UK, US or other such as Australia, Canada, Ireland.
