Can I reduce my social charges?

This may sound like a silly question but this is the first time I have done something like this and need a bit of advice. I would like to check that I will be paying charges on all of my income. I will be providing English classes at home so therefore will not have to pay out a lot, other than on a few resources. If for example, I buy some pens, paper, books etc. for my classes can I pay for these out of my earnings and therefore not pay charges on that amount?
