Can I receive equity as compensation?

I have been providing consulting services for a company based in the US, and have recently increased the amount of work I do for them. They would like to offer me equity in the company in addition to an increase in my compensation. How would this impact my thresholds as an auto-entrepreneur? Would I need to consult with an accountant before accepting this, and if so, how can I go about getting recommendations for English-speaking accountants who are familiar with startups / funds?
