Can a UK resident be an auto-entrepreneur?

We would like to have someone we know work for our business on an occasional basis. He is a UK national but has a property in France, where he is planning to spend more time. He is thinking of setting up as an auto-entrepreneur - does he need to be a French Resident to do this? We would employ him to do a certain number of hours per month and he would invoice us directly. Are there any pitfalls or anything else we should be aware of?
