Becoming an auto-entrepreneur in France on a student visa?

I’m an American citizen and have been living in France for two years as a student. I have been teaching English illegally to support myself but would like to start doing so in a legitimate fashion. I think what I want to do is register as an auto-entrepreneur at my prefecture - is that right?
Can I register as an auto-entrepreneur at the same time I have a student visa? I am also only a part-time student this year so I could always drop the student status and get a different kind of visa. I am currently in the States visiting family so I can go to the consulate here.
