Auto-entrepreneur or other legal structure for a kilt-maker?

We’ve recently moved to France and want to set up in business. I’m a freelance translator and am about to set up as an auto-entrepreneur, which it seems would be the best regime for my business in France. My husband’s situation is, however, a bit different. He’s training to be a kiltmaker, and will not be earning for some months yet. I’m not sure whether the auto-entrepreneur system would be right for him, as he will be incurring expenses, e.g. the cost of fabric, thread, etc. Although his income will be pretty small at first, as he will be accepting some commissions on a reduced cost basis until he is fully qualified.

He also has some training expenses that we will incur, as he is required to go back to Scotland intermittently to have his work assessed at the Kilt School and receive some further training. I wonder if you could advise us as to the best approach for him?
