As an Artisan is décennale insurance obligatory?

I’ve recently set up as an auto-entrepreneur business doing charpente en bois (traditionnelle) and menuiserie in France. There are a couple of issues that have come up that I just wanted to seek clarification on:

  1. What is the best place to get hold of the relevant DTU? Is it possible to get them free of charge?
  2. Is décennale insurance obligatory? Our representative at MAAF explained, you have to adhere to the DTU in order for your décennale insurance to be valid, which means your work is unlikely to be below standard, thus meaning that you should not need to claim on the décennale! However, I understand that this insurance is obligatory by law and required by many clients and certainly architects. I’d be grateful for your advice on this.
