Annual auto-entrepreneur income limits?

My husband is about to register as an auto-entrepreneur. If its from 1 October we presume that he can earn up to 8,000 euros until 31/12/11? His work will be intermittent, so is it OK that on a yearly basis, he earns perhaps 4,000 euros one month, 2,000 euros the next and then nothing for perhaps a couple of months? We presume that the total at the end of the year is the important figure, but we just need to make sure.
