Additional Health Coverage (i.e. private insurance) needed?

I will be moving to France in January and registering as an AE. I am from Canada, where we have a public health care system, however many companies offer supplementary health benefits and individuals may pay for additional private insurance to cover things that are not included in the public health coverage.

Is this common in France? Do many people under the AE scheme opt for additional health coverage beyond what they get with their Carte Vitale? Is there anywhere I can go for plan/provider recommendations?
