Working freelance in France for UK clients?

I’m about to move to France and will be setting up business as an auto-entrepreneur freelance editor. I’ll be working on projects for UK companies, editing legal/professional books. I’ve looked into this pretty thoroughly (including having an hour’s consultation with you), and I’m sure that the above is absolutely OK to do. However, my current employer has suddenly announced that it will not be able to use me as a freelance worker if I live in France.

I’m still seeking clarification on exactly why they have a problem with it, but so far they have said that there are ‘tax implications’ and ‘employment rights issues’. My view is that there can be no tax implications, as I’ll be self-employed. And no employment rights issues, as I won’t be an employee, or even in a quasi-employment situation.

Please could you ressure me that it’s perfectly OK, from a UK business perspective, for a UK/worldwide company to give work to a freelance worker in another country? Even typing that makes me think it’s a ridiculous question to be asking - but I just want to be sure of my facts before I present my case to them.
