Do we have to register with the chamber of commerce?

I understand that we must register our businesses in France with the chamber of commerce, but the more I look into this the more confusing the information is. Some say it applies to just some categories, others to all. I registered as an auto-entrepreneur Profession Liberale in September 2013, and my wife’s gite business was registered in April 2014 as an auto-entrepreneur commercant. I would be grateful for your guidance.
