Suitable company structure for mid to long term contract business?

I am trying to determine what type of business I should create in order to work as a freelance IT Contractor (business/product analyst) in Paris. I have worked as a contractor in the UK for the last few years through my own limited company, and after moving to Paris last year I am now being offered some local contract work. Hence I am looking into setting a business here in France, but I am confused by the different options and structures. I am now resident in France, although I do not yet have a carte vitale or tax reference number, and this would be the first time I have worked in France for a French company.

I have been advised by a French colleague that creating a SASU (société par actions simplifiée unipersonnelle) would result in a very similar structure to that of my UK limited company (which I have not yet closed), in that I would pay myself a base salary and receive additional remuneration through dividends, but other research I have done suggests that an EURL (l’entreprise unipersonnelle à responsabilité limitée) would also have a similar structure.

So I would appreciate some advice on which company type would be most suitable for me, given that:

  • I intend to only have one individual (myself) working for the company.
  • The annual income for my company could range anywhere between 30,000 euros and 80,000 euros depending on the length and number of the contract(s) for the first year, and between 50,000 euros and 80,000 euros for subsequent years.
  • Contract lengths can range between three and 12 months (and often result in extensions) so it is possible that for a given year there could only be a single client that is invoiced.
  • I would prefer not to use a Portage Salarial if possible, as I am accustomed to doing monthly business accounting and do not mind this, and have worked with umbrella companies in the past and have not had positive experiences.
