Salaried worker on sick leave

We run a small building company doing renovations and pools for second home owners. We have our one and only employee on sick leave with serious back problems which require surgery. He has been on sick leave since 25 June 2012 and he doesn’t want to return to work with us. We have discussed with our accountant an amicable severance of contract which will cost us in the region of 3600 euros. We know we cannot instigate this procedure until he is declared fully fit for work.

We have paid all our charges to date but assumed that we would not have to pay future charges if he is not at work, is this true? Are we required to pay full charges even though he is on sick leave? We have an insurance with PROBTP for extended 90 days sick leave, is this worthless?
