Pension and sickness benefits for auto-entrepreneurs?

I was under the impression that auto-entrepreneur businesses in France are not entitled to benefits while sick and did not claim for the months I was in hospital and later unable to work. I have since been told that I could have claimed - which advice is correct please?

We were also told that when registering as auto-entrepreneur back in 2007 that it would not be worth signing up for pension payments as we were too old to pay enough to have any benefit (we are 63 and 69 now). As our charges/payments are at the standard auto-entrepreneur rates and we have seen no reference to pensions in any documentation, please could you clarify the position?
