How do I start a business in France and get a SIRET number?

I am a 20 year naval veteran who has been asked to offer training for first aid medical courses. This offer for employment is on an as needed basis. In other words to fill in on training that their regular employee can not teach. However they have informed me that I need a SIRET number so that payment for my services will be above board. Where and what do I need to do in order to get this number? I still have my certificates from the US Navy to prove my training.
