How do I register a business in France as a carpenter?

We have just moved to France, my husband is a carpenter by trade he wants to become fully registered here but we are really unsure what to do. He generally wants to upcycle furniture for a living and sell it. But also will not turn down carpentry work if offered - this could be on sites or peoples homes. What do you think is best for him? Back in 2008 he did the attestation de stage de gestion course, but only has the certificate. We will be offering chambres d’hotes and a gite business next year too. Am I best to register this separately in my name when it opens?
