How do I get a social security number quickly?

My potential employer has asked for my social security card. I do not have one. I have an Attestation de droits a l’assurance malady which names my children and husband with their social security numbers. I am named on it but no number. The form expires on 18.9.2014. I went in to my local office and asked for my number, they looked on the computer and said it was being dealt with and would be sent to me in due course. That was many weeks ago. How can I obtain a social security number of my own quickly?
