Gites as secondary income when primary income taxed in UK?

My husband works in the UK and because he spends so much time there he pays tax and National Insurance in the UK. Our home is in France and he has an attestation entitling him to healthcare in this country. I work as a VDI and have a small income and so my own social security number and access to healthcare. We have a gite which we are going to start renting out.

My question is can we register it with the Impots under my husbands name as a secondary source of income even though he is taxed on his UK earnings in the UK, although they are included on our French declaration. If I register under my name it will be considered my primary income as earnings will exceed my income from VDI and so I understand I would have to register as a business and pay social charges? How do you go about registering a gite with the Impots?
