Gite as a secondary source of income in France?

Besides my auto-entrepreneur income as a Prof. Lib., next year my boyfriend and I also expect some income from a gite in France. I’ve read that if the gite income does not exceed a certain percentage of your main income, you can declare it as a secondary source of income and not pay any social charges over it. (it will add up to your income for income tax).

Could you tell me what the rules are on how much you can earn as a secondary income, for example as a percentage of your main income? Where / how do you need to register this secondary income? Is it the same story for chambre d’hotes?
