Get clients to pay their invoices on time?

Has anyone any idea how to get clients to pay their invoices on time? Our problem is that some of our gardening business clients live in the UK and expect us to carry out gardening work in their second homes or gites, but simply won’t pay (for months at a time) after the invoice is sent. Obviously we are going to drop the worst offenders - but before that, we would like to be paid.
