French address for long stay visa application?

I am planning to apply to for the Carte Compétences and Talents and need some advice about the long stay visa requirement that I have a French address. If I do get the Carte Compétences and Talents, I will rent an apartment for 6 months before leaving the U.S. But, I am hesitant to rent one before I know that I have the Carte. What have other people done to successfully fulfill this requirement? Is an apartment rented for 1 month enough proof of an address? Or, if I say that I will stay with a friend, what proof do I need to show?
