Closing SASU down and opening a company in another country?

I have a SASU, which has been a source of all sorts of stress I’ve never imagined having as a business owner, even though I’ve had businesses in three other countries.  It’s been in operation barely a few months, but I am just beside myself with all this crap. Another thing is that my accounting company is not all that helpful.

I’m thinking of closing my SASU and opening a company in another country (where this is legally possible), ideally in EU (?Ireland). Reading a couple of other threads on the forum, I gather, there is a little catch on the French side of things - if the French side thinks my company’s business is really conducted from/in France, they can make me pay social charges. Is this correct?

My company’s main activity is: ‘l’edition et la publication, l’enseignement et la formation’. I write and sell books and articles, and online courses which are in English, so definitely not targeting the French market. I also work with individuals (‘coaching’) and provide consulting for businesses - all worldwide and done in English. I work with freelancers from around the world- outsourcing a lot of activities linked with editing and publishing of my work.

The creative part of my work (the actual writing or recording of courses) happens where I live though (which is currently France). I travel a lot around Europe as well, and technically speaking, I can sit in a cafe across the bridge from where I live, and be in another EU country and type away my book.

  1. Would this type of activity be considered ‘based in France’ (or whatever the term is) and if I had a company, say in Ireland, I’d be risking to have social charges applied?
  2. Would it make a difference if I had that Ireland based company, but didn’t pay myself a salary but collected all in dividends at the end of financial year?
  3. And on a different note: I’ve read about the process of closing a SASU in France, but obviously, I can’t glean the reality of it from the description. Is closing a SASU likely to be complicated and long? How much time, you think, this can take in reality? (I read and was told that opening a SASU takes 1-2 weeks from the moment the paperwork is sent, and in my case it took about 5 months, so this is where I’m coming from).

I have a AE activity in a similar area: ‘formateur en langues’ and I’ve been trying to add a side activity to is ‘l’edition’. (I wrote about it in another thread in the AE forum).

What do you suggest the best course of action may be?
