Can a writer be an auto-entrepreneur?

I am hoping to move to France. I am a science writer who works from home. I was wondering if this would qualify for auto-entrepreneur? My employer is in Ireland and my income is quite variable. I have other income which is enough to support me but the tax for this needs to be paid at Ireland.
