Can I use a room in my home as a shop?

I plan to establish a small gift shop and workshop in one of the rooms in my house which is on the ground floor. I would like to know if this is possible and if I will need to see the mayor and or see / ask / do anything else to make this a legal activity? Our house insurance does not include a shop as yet. I also plan to register as an auto-entrepreneur.
